Mr. Charles L. Kuentz Jr., '54 is a Thomas Jefferson High School graduate and also served as the Director of the TJHS Mustang Band in the 70's. He and Ms. Maria Sanchez of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the St. John Bosco Catholic Church were awarded the 2013 AACOG Regional Citizens of the Year Award on Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Charles serves as the Director of the Helotes Area Community Band.
According to AACOG:
Charles established a community band in Helotes, building the band from seven members to 50 in less than four years. He oversees weekly rehearsals, researches music, programs concerts, and searches for venues to promote Helotes and the Band. Since their organizational meeting and their first concert in 2008, the Helotes Area Community Band has played 10 to 15 concerts every year before more than a total of 20,000 people. He has also mentored thousands of children since starting his career as a band director in Rocksprings, Texas in 1958. He was honored in 2009 with an Elementary School named in his honor in Helotes, and he was inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame, Class of 2012.
